She has the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard. She has the most gorgeous dark blonde hair I’ve ever seen. She only sang one song in this café while playing the piano. She wears light pink lipstick and light-coloured clothes. I’ve always wondered who she was really singing about ever since she got the job here at this café. She’s a waitress, but since there’s a small stage near the bar, she would sing while the band gets a rest.
One day, I got myself to ask for her number. She gave it to me, unbelievably. I called her that night and asked if she was busy and would like to have a drink with me sometime. She said she’s very busy. She’s still studying at the local college on arts. So we chatted for a while. I asked her about the song and she said yes, it was about someone.
“I knew her when I was little,” she told me. “It’s a long story.”
So after a while we give each other glances at the café. We call each other every now and then. I really like her, and I would come to the café to see her perform every day.
Then one day, she didn’t come to the café. I asked the bartender, and he said she called in sick this morning. I tried to call her but she didn’t answer. I didn’t sleep all night.
The next day, the girl called me early in the morning. She told me she needed to see me, A.S.A.P. I told her I had to go to work, but she convinced me that it was very important. We met each other at the back of the café she works.
“Tidus, I really need to tell you something,” she said.
“Okay,” I said, getting brace of myself.
“But you have to promise that you wouldn’t freak out.”
I looked at her quizzically. “Okay, I’ll try.”
“No, you have to promise!” she said. “If not, I won’t tell you!”
“Okay, okay, I promise, what is it?”
She sighed. Then suddenly she took out her right hand and a ball of wind just formed above it, floating. “I have these powers I can’t describe. Please don’t freak out,” she sobbed a bit suddenly.
“No, no, I think it’s amazing.” I stared at the amazing ball. It was small, but powerful, the spirit of this very girl standing in front of me. I looked her in the eyes. It was blue, very soft but striking. “It’s amazing.”
Tears start to roll down her eyes. She wiped it off with her free hand. “You know the girl in the song?”
“Uhuh.”
“Well, that girl’s me,” she said. The tears suddenly stopped coming. “You see, I’m this witch that everybody thinks is a freak. By the time I was in fifth grade, the orphanage I was living in stopped me from going to school. Everybody thought I was the reason my parents died. So I’ve been kept in that orphanage for years, the only thing I could do was draw and play the piano and sing. Until one day I managed to let myself out.
“The world outside was amazing. I loved the fresh air. I felt like I was floating, like I was walking on air. I used my talent to get myself some money, then got this job, and now paying myself through college. I’m happy on how I’m living, but now the people from the orphanage are searching for me – they say I owe them a favour. See, they have powers like me too. But they use it for bad.”
“I see.” There was an awkward silence for a while. “Is there anything I could help?”
“No, not really,” she said, after giving it a thought. She smiled sadly, and then hugged me. I hugged her back. I really love her. I felt like locking her there in my arms.
Suddenly, I felt a shot on my upper arm. I jumped and the girl let go of me. Suddenly a breeze came up and I notice it was her. I turned around and saw a lady wearing a black coat with blonde hair was smiling sinisterly. “We missed you, Namine.”
“Shut up!” the girl said. “I’m not Namine anymore! I’m Yuna!” Suddenly a long staff with a star shape on the end appeared in Yuna’s hands and the wind grew stronger.
“You think you can darken your hair and change your name and fool us?” the lady saaid. “Well, think again!” Suddenly the lady was covered with jittery electric. She groaned and used all the energy she could and ran for Yuna. She pulled out her hand and a line of lightning stormed out of it and Yuna avoided it. A cold wind blew in and Yuna was standing on the top of a small tornado. She brought in more air and focused it to blow out the lady. The lady was throwing lightning bolts everywhere near Yuna, but she just avoided it, still focusing on her target.
Then a strong wind came in and it totally blew the lady out. She was thrown into the corner and passed out. I turned to Yuna. The tornado was getting smaller, then slowly it faded away. She smiled at me guiltily. “Sorry.”
“THAT WAS AMAZING,” I said, astonished. Who would’ve known? Such an innocent looking girl could do such amazing things.
The staff with a star on it disappeared. She looked normal again. “So what now?” I asked.
“I guess I’ll just have to fight them alone,” she said.
“That can’t be right,” I argued. “I’ve got to be able to help.”
“Well, that’s the truth,” she told me. “Sorry, Tidus.” And with that, she walked off. I went for her, but as soon as my arms were stretched out, she turned, smiled, waved me goodbye and disappeared.
After that day, I never saw her again, and when I call her number, the phone operator said it was out of service. But once I thought I saw her watching the band at the café perform. And out of a million times I tried calling her, there was one time, it left for voicemail. It said:
“Sorry I’ve disappeared, but the little freaky girl is now living a life.”
Little freaky house
In a little freaky place,
Little freaky town
In a little freaky world.
A little freaky girl
With a little freaky face,
Saying funny things that you have never heard…
